Psalm 115

The Futility of Idols and the Trustworthiness of God

115 Not unto us, O Lord, not unto us,
But to Your name give glory,
Because of Your mercy,
Because of Your truth.
Why should the Gentiles say,
“So where is their God?”

But our God is in heaven;
He does whatever He pleases.
Their idols are silver and gold,
The work of men’s hands.
They have mouths, but they do not speak;
Eyes they have, but they do not see;
They have ears, but they do not hear;
Noses they have, but they do not smell;
They have hands, but they do not handle;
Feet they have, but they do not walk;
Nor do they mutter through their throat.
Those who make them are like them;
So is everyone who trusts in them.

O Israel, trust in the Lord;
He is their help and their shield.
10 O house of Aaron, trust in the Lord;
He is their help and their shield.
11 You who fear the Lord, trust in the Lord;
He is their help and their shield.

In our world focused on self and personal gain, it’s hard for us to even enter into this prayer time without quickly thinking about ourselves. It’s all about our needs and our wants. But today, as I read this psalm and reflect in prayer, I recognize that it’s all for You. This prayer time is all about You. You are worthy of our praise and our total attention today. Lord, as the psalmist declared, You are our hope and our shield. If I truly believe what I have just declared…it is going to show up in the way I live today. Prayer and seeking You won’t be an afterthought – it will be my first thought. Seeking Your guidance and direction won’t be what I will do if all else fails – it will be from the outset. You are my help and my shield. Lord, the heaven and the earth is Yours. Because You have given me life for another day, let me praise You because You are worthy of every word, note, and lyric!
