Psalm 42

To the Chief Musician. A Contemplation of the sons of Korah.

42 As the deer pants for the water brooks,
So pants my soul for You, O God.
My soul thirsts for God, for the living God.
When shall I come and appear before God?
My tears have been my food day and night,
While they continually say to me,
“Where is your God?”

When I remember these things,
I pour out my soul within me.
For I used to go with the multitude;
I went with them to the house of God,
With the voice of joy and praise,
With a multitude that kept a pilgrim feast.

Why are you cast down, O my soul?
And why are you disquieted within me?
Hope in God, for I shall yet praise Him
For the help of His countenance.

O my God, my soul is cast down within me;
Therefore I will remember You from the land of the Jordan,
And from the heights of Hermon,
From the Hill Mizar.
Deep calls unto deep at the noise of Your waterfalls;
All Your waves and billows have gone over me.
The Lord will command His lovingkindness in the daytime,
And in the night His song shall be with me—
A prayer to the God of my life.

I will say to God my Rock,
“Why have You forgotten me?
Why do I go mourning because of the oppression of the enemy?”
10 As with a breaking of my bones,
My enemies reproach me,
While they say to me all day long,
“Where is your God?”

11 Why are you cast down, O my soul?
And why are you disquieted within me?
Hope in God;
For I shall yet praise Him,
The help of my countenance and my God.

Worship Song – “Yearn” by Shane Barnard & Shane Everett. This has been one of my favorite songs for years. It captures the message of Psalm 42 – of wanting to long for God above everything else. These guys are gifted singers and worship leaders.

Link for today’s worship song:

I want to yearn for you. In the words of the song today, I want to burn with passion over You…and only You. Your joy is mine, yet why am I fine? Lord, today I pray these words of the song, because they reflect the psalm for today. I want to have the kind of longing for You like a deer longs for water. In fact, it’s the life of the deer. That’s the kind of desperation that I want for You.
And Lord, why is my soul downcast? I have every reason to hope in God. But the reality of my journey is that I get down and I get discouraged. I look around and have every reason to be jumping with joy, but that’s not how I often feel. Why am I discouraged? So I repeat the words of this psalm today (New Living Translation paraphrase of vs. 11), “Why is my heart so sad? I will put my hope in God! I will praise him again—my Savior and my God!” Bring joy instead of gloom – bring hope instead of hopelessness. Help me to long for You alone today!

“Yearn” Cover – with “As the Deer”
I happened up on this cover of Yearn. This video features the song the older worship song that is vs. 1. Hopefully this song will remain on YouTube so that you can see this creative compilation.
