Praying the Psalms - Blog LogoPsalm 40:1-3

To the Chief Musician. A Psalm of David.

40 I waited patiently for the Lord;
And He inclined to me,
And heard my cry.
He also brought me up out of a horrible pit,
Out of the miry clay,
And set my feet upon a rock,
And established my steps.
He has put a new song in my mouth—
Praise to our God;
Many will see it and fear,
And will trust in the Lord.

Dear Lord,
Today I say say “Thank You” for taking my feet out of the miry clay and placing my feet on the Rock! God, you blessed me with people all around me who shared with me the hope of Christ. You gave me a church where I could worship and learn of Your great love. But Lord, above all of that, You moved in my heart drawing me to You. So today I can pray…I can sing…I can be set free from my own messes. You give me a new song each and every day. When my song is gloomy and discouraging – You make it uplifting and positive! When my song is shallow – You push me deeper in my walk with You. Thank you for a NEW song today! As has been the prayer throughout this journey in the psalms, once again I pray for my own TRUST in You. Help me to “worship You until the very end” – as the song declared today.

But Lord, as I read these words I recognize that this is not simply a song of praise. It is also a psalm of the challenges of life. The psalmist speaks of being brought out of the “horrible pit”. God, there are difficult days for everyone. We all face days when the darkness will not lift. Some who want to be filled with joy seemed to be walking around with a heavy weight. Lord, we don’t understand why there are those who suffer endlessly with depression, but You know them intimately and we pray that You would lift them out of the “horrible pit”. Help us to be free from guilt or self-condemnation when we just don’t have the joy for the day – but restore it once again so that we can walk in the freedom of knowing You. We intercede today for those who are in that horrible pit and we pray for their soon deliverance.

Thank You Lord for the sure foundation today and help me to worship You at the end of this day!
Amen
