Psalm 36

To the Chief Musician. A Psalm of David the servant of the Lord.

36 An oracle within my heart concerning the transgression of the wicked:
There is no fear of God before his eyes.
For he flatters himself in his own eyes,
When he finds out his iniquity and when he hates.
The words of his mouth are wickedness and deceit;
He has ceased to be wise and to do good.
He devises wickedness on his bed;
He sets himself in a way that is not good;
He does not abhor evil.

Your mercy, O Lordis in the heavens;
Your faithfulness reaches to the clouds.
Your righteousness is like the great mountains;
Your judgments are a great deep;
Lord, You preserve man and beast.

How precious is Your lovingkindness, O God!
Therefore the children of men put their trust under the shadow of Your wings.
They are abundantly satisfied with the fullness of Your house,
And You give them drink from the river of Your pleasures.
For with You is the fountain of life;
In Your light we see light.

10 Oh, continue Your lovingkindness to those who know You,
And Your righteousness to the upright in heart.
11 Let not the foot of pride come against me,
And let not the hand of the wicked drive me away.
12 There the workers of iniquity have fallen;
They have been cast down and are not able to rise.

Worship Song – “Where the Spirit of the Lord is” – the emphasis of this song with Chris Tomlin is the liberty that we have in Christ!

Lord, as I read this psalm today, I recognize that there are just going to be people in this world who are bent on doing evil. But even as I recognize that, help me to have the kind of upward focus that David had here in Psalm 36. On this July 4th holiday, help me to realize that I am truly FREE in Christ! Instead of getting consumed by the negative and the challenges, David turned his focus on praising You. Lord, today I want to put my trust in You under the shadow of Your wings. Like the eagle that symbolizes the freedom of our nation, help me to run to You as my freedom!
I want to know the river of Your pleasures. I have all kinds of things that I run after thinking they will satisfy me. Help me to realize that all of that is futile compared to You! Lord, let my life reflect the reality that I am living in the fountain of life. Show me your lovingkindness today and keep my eyes on You. Thank you that my greatest freedom today is not in a nation – it’s in Your merciful gift of salvation!

Here is a bonus song for today. This is by a worship team at Vertical Church. It’s an upbeat song speaking of our liberty in Christ. “Vertical Church Band: Jailbreak”
