We have been looking forward to these weeks in June for quite some time. Following our Halloween alternative event here at the church last year, we realized we needed to host an additional event at another point in the year that would reach out to young families. We decided that the best time would be to offer an event in coordination with our VBS ministry! For many months we planned and prepared for an outreach festival that would be a fun time for the entire family. We received permission from the property owners of a piece of land right beside the Swamp Rabbit Trail and the idea seemed to be growing! This was going to be a unique opportunity to meet with the community!
By the week of the event we had access to 4 huge inflatables and our volunteers had come up with lots and lots of games. We gathered around 7:30am that morning on Saturday June 16th and the work began! While getting volunteers is always a challenge, before long it was clear that our Enoree family was going to show up for this one! I had printed 42 nametags for our Enoree volunteers and we quickly ran out. That was a great problem to have. There were church members putting up tents, tables, games, food, banners, etc. Everyone was pitching in and making it a reality!
By 10am, everything was ready and we were ready to receive the people….only no one came! The trail was empty, the traffic was just passing by, and I began to wonder if our advertising had been effective. But by 10:30am…the people started coming and by 11am…our event was full! Our Student Ministry stood by the trail and handed out water. Our volunteers registered folks as they entered…and it was just an exciting scene to know that Enoree Baptist Church had pulled this event off!
It was a hot day and it was exhausting in many ways, but the opportunity to be out among the Travelers Rest community was like a breath of fresh air! We know we need to move beyond the walls of the church and this was our chance to do just that.
So now we have kicked off VBS! We had many of the same kids that came to the Festival event show up at VBS – so that’s a good sign. Nearly 1/2 of the kids present were not Enoree Baptist Church kids. So we are all praying that God will use this time to share the love of Christ on the level of each child so that they will one day come to a saving knowledge of God! Our theme verse this week is John 14:6 – Jesus is the way, the truth, and the life! I pray some child will understand that and respond this week!
